This is about the dream of a sleeper who, like the wind, is floating on the skeleton of the building in construction in 1974. His body is playing with the upper decoration of a carnival party in 1978 and finally is getting lost in the big empty space of a day- after-party modernist/post wwII utopia scenery. During the 70’s, the Polonez Hotel was the pride of the city of Poznan. The building was modern, 14th floors, 55 meters high and 408 rooms. The construction of the hotel started in August 1972, using innovating construction technics and was accomplished in 1974. Since 2012, the hotel has been a student housing. The installation is inspired by archival photographs founded in the internet, from the photo journalist Stanisław Wiktor. One set shown on the building in construction and the workers in 1974. Another set was about a concert, ball and carnival party at the hotel in 1978. With the installation « Polonaise After-Party », I attempt again to create the glorious days of the hotel. But everything is getting slippery and the balance is delicate. The giant concrete skeleton of the hotel in construction is screen-printed on a soft bed sheet, like he print of a human body would stay in a bed in the morning. The body of a worker, sitting on a ladder, presented on a pillow. The bed sheet in hanging like a fake ghost, hiding colored balloons. The shape of the odd drapery of the ball from 1978 is drawn on transparent paper and placed in a big mirror. We are on the scene, we are a part of it. The ground is a photograph, a mess after a birthday party, colorful confettis, paper hat and empty glasses are lying on the floor. The shadow of the empty structure of the neon sign « Orbis Hotel » is drawn on the wall, slipping on the floor. On a video, the reflection of the light of a computer screen is reactivating the ball, a blue tube is sucking the water from the ground of a construction site. C’est à propos du rêve d’un dormeur qui, comme le vent, flotte sur le squelette d’un bâtiment en construction en 1974. Son corps joue avec la décoration du plafond d’une fête de carnaval en 1978 pour finalement se perdre dans le grand espace vide d’un décor d’un lendemain de fête d’une utopie moderniste/d’après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. |
